His Reflection We Must Give

As I meditate on scripture, sinking into God’s word, I always find treasures that stand out in my mind, that move through my heart, and speak to my soul.  Many people are familiar with 1 Corinthians 13:13 ~ And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love. ~ but have you ever really pondered what it means.  Yes, there are three things that will stand the test of time, that will live beyond our own lifespan, that will never change, never leave, and never fail, but look deeper.  Let’s just look at the greatest of the three ~ LOVE.

What is love?  Yes, it is a feeling, but feelings are fleeting and can change.  That could not be what is meant by love in this passage, as it will not remain as the scripture denotes.  Love can be a desire, but desires fade and die with time, therefore that cannot be the meaning referred to in this passage.  There is only one love that stands the test of time, that remains when all else may fail…God’s love.  God’s love, or agape love, is the strongest, non judgmental, consistent, everlasting love that exists in all of creation.  It has been, still is, and will always be there as it comes from God, and God has been, still is, and will always be there.  He loved us so much that He gave his only Son to die for us that we may be reconciled to Him and have everlasting life in Heaven!  That is the love referred to in 1 Corinthians 13:13.  That is the love that will remain.  That is the love we are to give, but are truly unable unless the Spirit dwells within for as I stated, it is a Godly, perfect love, and as we know….we are not perfect!

What does this love look like? Check out 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

As Christians, we are called to be like Christ, and give love to those we encounter, being a reflection of God in this world of hatred and darkness.  So today as you encounter people in your daily life, ask yourself if the love you give is a reflection of Christ.  Are you patient with others, even when you are in a rush?  Are you kind to others, when they are not kind to you?  Are you humble with others, putting them before you and your desires?  Do you forgive when others wrong you or do you hold a grudge and harbor resentment?  Do you rejoice in the truth?  Do you protect, trust, hope and persevere, or give up on others quickly?

One last scripture to ponder: John 13:34-35  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

God loves you unconditionally, with a forgiving heart, giving you mercy when you don’t deserve it, and always showing kindness and grace, loving you so deeply and greatly that He sacrificed His son for you.  Can you say the same?  Are you giving the sacrificial, forgiving, unconditional love God has so freely given you?

His Reflection We must Give

A verse that is lovely
A verse that is true
One that applies
In all that I do

A verse so beautiful
With joy, promise and care
One that reminds me
God will always be there

A verse that will refine
Speaks of a love forever true
A verse that is perfect
Revealing our love from You

God’s love is longsuffering
It does not envy and is kind
His love will not boast
It will not leave others behind

The love that God offers is not arrogant
Nor is it rude
No evil resides in His perfect love
It rejoices in truth

There is no resentment in God’s love
It bears all things
Believes all that is good and true
And hopes all things

Perhaps the greatest gift of God’s love
Is its willingness to endure
No matter our failings or maturity
His love for us remains pure

This verse exists within Gods’ very word
A testimony to His wonderful grace
A reflection of tenderness
Where we can rest in His embrace

A verse unlike any other
An example by which to live
This love that God provides to us
Is the same love that we must give
